GABAM PhD GRANTS

GABAM offers a limited number of grants to support PhD candidates in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies. Grants of up to 20.000 TL are available, depending on the proposed project, and must be used for ongoing PhD research.

GABAM – SRII JOINT FELLOWSHIP

This joint fellowship supports a Post-Doctoral or Senior Scholar that will contribute to the digital exhibition “Nordic Tales, Byzantine Paths”, a collaboration between GABAM and the SRII which will be presented in the 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies (Venice, August 2022). Other duties will include the preparation of a large EU project grant about artistic interconnections between the Byzantine and Nordic worlds.

Fellowship will include the monthly stipend, insurance and free housing at the guesthouse of SRII. It will be for six months and the expected starting date is in February 2022. Depending on the pandemic conditions, the fellowship may begin online for a certain period, during which the stipend will be paid. The fellow will have access to the libraries and research facilities of both Koç University and the SRII.

Church of St. Euphemia: Revisiting a Byzantine Monument

The Consulate General of Greece in Istanbul in collaboration with Koç University Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (GABAM) has the honour to present an online two-part lecture about the Saint Euphemia Church in Sultanahmet, Istanbul, entitled: “Church of St. Euphemia: Revisiting a Byzantine Monument”
The first part of the lecture, delivered by Prof. Engin Akyürek, Koç University, will present the history of the monument and the life of Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon as represented in the frescoes. He will also give a brief overview of the recent restoration works, conducted between the years 2013-2020.
The second part of the lecture delivered by Ass. Prof. Anastasios Tantsis, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, will focus on the architectural features of the Saint’s martyrium and its transformations through its long period of use.
The lecture will be conducted on Greek and Turkish with Greek-Turkish-English subtitle options.
