Kutlu Akalın graduated from the Department of International Relations at Bilkent University in 1996. He completed his master's degree in the Department of History at Bilkent University in 1999. He received his doctoral degree from the Department of History at Princeton University in 2011. From 2012 to 2020, he served as a faculty member at the Institute of Living Languages at Mardin Artuklu University. Since 2020, he has been serving as a faculty member in the Department of History at Istanbul Medeniyet University.
